A video of me running through the game Passage, with captions explaining the game a bit. It’s a 100 pixel by 16 pixel game by Jason Rohrer that was submitted for Kokoromi’s Gamma256 event. The game runs through a character’s life, starting with him choosing to fall in love or not, then walking and aging. The score goes up as you walk right (in larger increments if you fall in love) and treasure chests are scattered below. Kind of a cute game. Check it out.

October 17, 2012 at 6:12 pmi enjoyed this game a lot, most games nowadays lack in emotions, and that's why i felt so confortable playing this one. The music, the background, even the inocent graphics, but the most important part that made me enjoy this so much were my silent thoughts while playing, making the perfect storyline that i could get. I am a person of deep thoughts, i guess that's why i enjoyed this, i got the meaning and fell in love with it, or maybe i just liked it 😛 great entertainment

January 10, 2013 at 8:49 amfuck.. i get it now i just played it and was really confused. people where talking about treasure and stuff that i had now idea was even in this game. the entire time i just moved left, with the girl i looked back a couple of times but only for a second because i thought i was playing it wrong. so i just pushed ahead until we both died. no treasure, no high score, i just missed it all.

March 6, 2013 at 5:45 ami find it funny that people say they played it "wrong". the first time i played it i just walked forward until i died because i was enamored with the changing scenery, i had no idea you could even move vertically, or that there were walls or treasure. but retroactively i think that was a totally legitimate way to play, as is anything else i could have done intentional or otherwise.

March 9, 2013 at 9:55 amI recently watched an old Egoraptor/Nostalgia Critic panel video where Ego mentioned his love for this game, which is how I learned of it. This game is certainly something else.

August 26, 2013 at 12:46 amI think that your score is your age (512-> 51,2 years old) (except in the beggining, because it's impossible to fall in love so young) and the treasures are like goals/dreams and the more you get the longer you live because that means your life was not a waste of time. That's why he dies right after his spouse when you don't take the treasures and can't see more scenarios as the video shows as.. Anyone agrees?

March 9, 2014 at 8:53 pmEye opening. My idea of what I thought a game could be after playing this was completely changed. Every games designer should play this. Such honesty. It has stayed with me over the years and I am forever revisiting its ability to trigger such powerful emotion in players.

March 30, 2014 at 6:42 pmWhere's the part where some douchebag has an affair with your wife? Or where she divorces you, leaving you broke? Or where you get jailed for DUI? Where's the part where your selfish kids dump you in a care home? Or where some social worker steals your pension?
What a silly, unrealistic game.

June 22, 2014 at 12:04 amYou know… if this was more realistic, you would die randomly and not at the end…. not everybody makes it to being an old man ya know.

July 15, 2014 at 2:09 amInteresting concept, TERRIBLE execution. Don't get me wrong, I can fully get behind the idea of a game depicting life from birth to death. This is about the worst possible game that could have been made using that concept. You walk from left to right and dodge pointless, repetitive obstacles for five minutes. The pixel art makes it impossible to notice the aging process until the very end. Any deep commentary on life in this game is utterly wasted by the dull and unappealing gameplay. I'm actually mad about this because it's such a great idea, and it deserves a much, much better game. I mean, this is like Atari E.T. bad.

February 15, 2015 at 4:13 amThis is one of 4 games I have to do a break down of for my college class. I'm not really sure what to say about it. It's so odd. The lack of viewable areas (not only is it only about a single character tall, but the areas to the right and eventually left, are just blurred and compressed versions of what's coming up. The point system makes it seem like an arcade game. I don't mind the 8bit look and with some tweaking, I'm sure it could be great.

December 23, 2015 at 6:55 pmGames can be art, tell a story like any movie or literature. Games can be entertainment.
Play teaches animals about life, and I think the next step is to turn games into work.
Once games can engage us in actually contributing to say a research project, it will have evolved.
Each difficult part broken up to be worked on by many individuals/teams in a silly and fun game-like manner.
Like using software to turn the connection in the internet to part of a super computer.
Just connect and allow our minds to work on a problem as well.
Trillions of man hours of work done in seconds will be the outcome.

October 20, 2016 at 7:12 amGames are art, and it's not for having pretentious messages, sad piano music, and other indie award-bait trappings; it's for the gameplay, and the immersion. The mechanics. The controls. Things that are specific to video games; not things that reduce video games to movies with controllers coming out of them.
Super Mario Brothers is art, no matter what anyone says.

October 6, 2017 at 1:40 amI so very much want to create games like this that are meaningful but also straightforward in the way that everything is communicated through the interactions with the screen. But I wouldn't know where to even begin.
